COLUMBUS, OHIO. – Yesterday, U.S. Rep. Mike Carey (R-Ohio-15), Chairman of the Congressional Humanities Caucus, hosted a reception for the Congressional Art Competition for Ohio’s 15th Congressional District. Addelynn Ricketts of Greenon High School won first place with her work, Hidden in Hues.
“As the Chairman of the Congressional Humanities Caucus and a champion of the arts and humanities, the Congressional Art Competition is incredibly important to me. This year, 85 student artworks were submitted to my office for the competition, nearly tripling our previous record,” Chairman Carey said. “I am incredibly grateful for all the students who submitted works, and I was captivated by the talent here in our community. I want to thank everyone who participated, volunteered, and judged along the way. The volunteers’ help was integral to making this year’s competition a success. I also want to congratulate Addelynn Ricketts on winning first place and I look forward to welcoming her to Washington.”
BACKGROUND:
The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have participated in the nationwide competition.
A reception for the first-place winner will take place in Washington, D.C. with assistance being provided to help the winning student and a family member travel to the opening of the exhibition and the unveiling of their work of art. In past years, 1st place winners also have qualified to submit competitive scholarship applications for several art schools around the country.
