WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, U.S. Rep. Mike Carey (R-Ohio-15), a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, questioned U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer at a Ways and Means hearing on President Trump’s trade policies.
During the hearing, Rep. Carey asked USTR Greer about critical minerals, unleashing American energy into foreign markets, and provisions the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
HIGHLIGHTS:
ON PRESIDENT TRUMP’S AGENDA TO UNLEASH AMERICAN ENERGY:
REP. CAREY: “President Trump unleashed the American [Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)] industry by ending the former administration’s era permitting pause. And as you know, the U.S. LNG industry is already being targeted by nations that are subject to the president’s new tariffs. So, my question to you is: do you have any plans to prioritize America’s newly restored LNG export capacity in conversations with foreign nations?”
USTR GREER: “That’s something that comes up regularly. Obviously, we’ve been talking about the trade deficit and many countries have been quick to say, you know, one area where the U.S. is very competitive is oil and LNG, and it’s something that they want to buy. And so, it’s been very common in these conversations for them to suggest that that is one way to help achieve more trade balance, etc.”
ON KEY USMCA PROVISIONS BEING CONTINUED:
REP. CAREY: “USMCA is facing a sunset review process that needs to be completed by the end of July of 2026. Will the tariff exclusion continue during the lead up of that review to give the manufacturers more certainty in the upcoming months?”
USTR GREER: “Well, that’s the current status. Alright, I don’t want to get ahead of the President on how he wants to treat that, but that’s certainly the current status. And I would expect that if Canada and Mexico continue on this path, that would continue to be the status.”
