Rep. Carey Announces 2022 Congressional Art Competition for High School Students

Columbus, Ohio – Congressman Mike Carey (OH-15) today announced that all high school students residing in Ohio’s 15th Congressional District are eligible to participate in the 2022 Congressional Art Competition, “An Artistic Discovery.”

“The Congressional Art Competition is a fantastic opportunity for high school students to showcase their talents on a national stage,” Congressman Carey said. “I encourage all interested students to participate and I look forward to welcoming the winning student to Washington D.C. where their artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol alongside other winners from across the country.”

The winning student will have their artwork displayed inside the United States Capitol for one year and will also be invited to Washington, D.C. to take part in a national reception. Winning submissions will be determined by a panel of experts and local officials with the overall winner being notified during the first week of May.

In addition to the overall winner, 2^nd and 3^rd place winners as well as a People’s Choice award will be selected and displayed in Carey’s District Offices. Images of selected artwork will be posted on his Facebook page and constituents will have an opportunity to vote for the winner. The student whose artwork receives the most “likes” will be designated the winner of the People’s Choice award.

Art works entered in the contest must be two-dimensional and may be up to 22 inches by 22 inches and up to 2 inches in depth. Acceptable media, original in design, concept, and execution include:

• Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor
• Drawings: pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, markers
• Collage
• Prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block prints
• Mixed media: use of more than two media such as pencil, ink, watercolor.
• Computer-generated art
• Photography

All submissions are due by Friday, April 22, and can either be mailed or delivered in person to any of Congressman Carey’s District Offices in Columbus, Lancaster, or Wilmington. Full guidelines may be found here.

The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Teachers, principals, and parents are encouraged to bring this competition to the attention of students as an opportunity to showcase their artistic talents and represent their school to a national audience.
