Carey Attends White House Bill Signing Ceremony of HALT Fentanyl Act

Jul 16, 2025 | Press Releases

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Mike Carey (R-Ohio-15), a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, joined President Trump and other Congressional leaders for the signing of the Halt All Lethal Trafficking of Fentanyl Act (HALT Fentanyl Act). This law aims to crack down on illicit fentanyl and fentanyl-related substances from making it into American communities and threatening the lives of American citizens.

“Too many Ohioans and their loved ones have been devastated by the opioid epidemic, especially the scourge of deadly fentanyl. By signing this law today, we mark a turning point in keeping fentanyl out of our communities and honor those we’ve needlessly lost to this poison,” Rep. Carey said. “I was proud to vote for this bill and see the bipartisan support it received in Congress, and I thank President Trump for signing it into law. While there is still work left to do in the fight against opioids, this is a major win for Ohio and our nation.”

BACKGROUND:

The HALT Fentanyl Act will permanently place fentanyl-related substances as a class into Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). A schedule I controlled substance is a drug, substance, or chemical that has a high potential for abuse; has no currently accepted medical value; and is subject to regulatory controls and administrative, civil, and criminal penalties under the CSA.

The bill passed the House of Representatives on June 12, 2025, by a vote of 321-104.

On June 16, 2025, Rep. Carey toured the Franklin County Crisis Care Center, a new facility to help individuals dealing with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and help them on the road to recovery.

On July 3, Rep. Carey voted to pass the Republican reconciliation bill through the House, which included the largest investment in border security in American history to help crack down on illicit fentanyl attempting to cross the border.
